The Generate Image feature is powered by the new Adobe Firefly Image 3 foundation model. Adobe is also implementing an improved font browser, with real-time access to Adobe’s 25,000-plus fonts in the cloud. Yet, the ability to complete tasks in minutes that formerly took hours has swayed some artists to embrace the technology. Of all the new features coming to Adobe’s photo and video editing software, these five new AI-powered features could have the most impact. Meanwhile, generative AI has been in the crosshairs of artists, authors, and other creative professionals, who say that the foundational models that power the tech were trained on copyrighted media without consent or compensation.

I tried both in my albeit brief testing and had plenty of “Photo” versions that were less photorealistic than the “Art” versions, so I’m not sure how reliable this will actually be for the time being. That is changing today, as the latest Photoshop beta comes with a new Generate Image feature that, thanks to AI, allows for text-to-image generation.

Within one year of being launched, Firefly was brought into Photoshop, Express, Illustrator, Substance 3D and more, while supporting various workflows in Creative Cloud applications. Also, despite taking part in a one-on-one detailed demonstration of the new Generative Remove tool in Lightroom last month, Adobe never once mentioned Generative Credits or that the new tool would require them. Similarly, Adobe’s newly-announced Generative Remove tool in Lightroom — a tool that is classified as “Early Access beta” — also incurs a Generative Credit per use. These usage number exist now because it says it wants to be transparent about usage so that when it does start enforcing these limits, users can see how much they’ve used historically. It’s not clear when Adobe will actually start to enforce limits, such as app slowdowns, if Credits are expended. The first products from Canon, Nikon, and Leica to adopt the Frame.io Camera to Cloud Standard are the Leica SL3, Nikon Z6 III, Z8, and Z9 (through the NX MobileAir app for iOS and Android) and the Canon C400 and C80 cine cameras. Presumably more cameras will also get Frame.io integration via firmware updates, but no further details are available at this stage.

This should please any users who would prefer not to use any AI elements in their images but still want to remove distracting or unwanted objects and people without doing the manual work. However, it’s still not a perfect defense against image misuse, with several ways to sidestep metadata and watermarks. Adobe’s third-generation Firefly model, which has higher-quality image generation capabilities compared to its predecessor, is also available in a public, global beta for anyone to try outside of Photoshop via the Firefly web application. Each of the new tools performs exactly the function that it’s named for, but there were also some additional new features. “This massive new update to Photoshop takes creativity to unprecedented levels—whether you are a professional or brand new to Photoshop,” said Ashley Still, senior vice president, Creative Product Group at Adobe in a statement.

It’s quite hit-and-miss from personal experience, so you might want to stick to manually removing parts of your picture for now. From personal experience, I have found that its Spot Healing feature is much more efficient than Lightroom. However, I have noticed that using the Healing tool in Lightroom can become quite laborious if you have multiple areas to fix.

Additionally, the Enhance Detail feature for Generative Fill has been improved to provide greater sharpness and detail for large images. Moreover,the new Selection Brush tool simplifies the process of selecting specific objects for editing. Adobe has also added its Photoshop “Generative Expand” tool to InDesign, which lets you make an image larger using the crop tool, then uses generative AI to fill the frame with extended imagery. Plus, there’s a new Adobe Substance 3D Viewer app out in beta through the Creative Cloud platform, which lets you integrate 3D content into 2D Photoshop designs more easily. Now, using a brush, you can choose between adjustments like curves, exposure, levels, brightness and contrast, color balance, and more.

PetaPixel was able to progress to the purchase of additional credits with both an All Apps and Photography plan and at no point did the Creative Cloud app provide an alert that this was not necessary. For example, you can use Quick Actions to quickly edit a portrait — it will detect your subject, the background, and features to retouch like teeth, eyes, or skin. Quick Actions automatically create individual masks of each selected element to either enhance with available controls or refine further in the masking panel. So you can select your favourite images from a recent shoot in Frame.io and then automatically copy them into Lightroom for editing. Once edited, you can upload them back into Frame.io for further feedback from people you are collaborating with, or for distribution to customers. There is no need to download images from storage media, and the Frame.io interface has been spruced up to be faster and more intuitive to use.

The demo I took part in allowed me to create a detailed, art-style 1920s Speakeasy, which was the background for a fairy already drawn in Photoshop by a digital artist. The quality of the AI was great for a starting point but needed refinement, both by hand and by further tweaks via text prompts. Adobe has been diligently tweaking and optimizing the experience to ensure users retain control over the generated content. With features like Reference Images and Style Effects, artists can efficiently ideate and streamline repetitive tasks, and achieve complex and custom outputs.

Once you’ve made basic adjustments, you can use AI to add some polish to your pictures.

In a blog post by Photoshop product manager Pam Clark, the company detailed more features for the graphics editing platform, which use Adobe’s generative AI model, Firefly. Highlights include a “Distraction Removal” tool within the existing “Remove” tool added last year, which lets you circle objects or people in the background to get rid of them. Lightroom users have long had access to the Adjustment Brush, but now the feature has made its way to Photoshop Beta. If you wanted to do this before, you would have to create a layer that impacted the entire image, add a layer mask, and brush out the areas you didn’t want to have that adjustment (or some variation of this).

We’ve sorted through the 100+ innovations in Creative Cloud and highlighted the biggest changes coming for Adobe users. Adobe unveiled new editing features this week to try and solve the most annoying problems in Creative Cloud. Since Adobe introduced Generative Fill and Generative Expand to Photoshop last May and July, users have adopted the former at a 10 times greater rate than the average new Photoshop feature. The company believes that thanks to its new, much better Firefly Image 3 Model, Photoshop users will benefit from the company’s AI advances more than ever.

These latest advancements mark another significant step in Adobe’s integration of generative AI into its creative suite. Since the launch of the first Firefly model in March 2023, Adobe has generated over 9 billion images with these tools, and that number is only expected to go up. It brings new tools like the Generative Shape Fill, so you can add detailed vectors to shapes using just a few descriptive words. Another is a Text to Pattern feature, which enables the creation of customizable, scalable vector patterns. Dinda tests this tool on complex images, like a crowded street in front of the Colosseum, and shows that while it doesn’t always get it right, it’s a massive time-saver.

Enhance Detail is a more conventional image-enhancement option, albeit an AI-based one, improving the “sharpness and clarity” of the content generated. This current Firefly article will focus on Firefly integrations within the release version of Adobe Illustrator and the public beta version of Adobe Photoshop. While there is no set timeline for Generative Workspace to be implemented publicly into Adobe Photoshop or other Adobe programs, you can explore it in Photoshop Beta.
